What is Autism

Autism is a developmental disability that impact social interaction, communication skills and repetitive restrictive behaviors. Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, group activities and games. The disorder makes it hard for them to communicate with others and relate to the outside world. Due to the nature of the disability, children with autism acquire knowledge and through alternative means of education. Those educational and treatment methodologies specifically used and or designed to meet the needs of children and adults with autism such as applied behavior analysis, picture exchange communication systems etc. must be used.

The Current Situation

The current prevalence rates in the U.S. where it is estimated that one in every 150 children are afflicted with autism. In Ghana, and other developing countries, this diagnosis is rare. Parents of children with autism are left seeking other explanations for their children's behavior, often finding nothing that satisfies their need for information. Where fear resides in place of effective resources, even a diagnosis can do little to appease families. Education for these children and families must be a priority.
